Championship Weekend

This coming weekend features the Iowa State Cyclocross Championship Saturday at Lions Park in Altoona and the Illinois State Championship at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. For eastern Iowa racers Saturday is all but mandatory, of course. But anyone preparing for Nationals or just looking to extend their season should consider making the trip to race Sunday as well.

Lion's Park has served as Iowa's championship 'cross venue since 2008. The course will be fast and flowy, with a paved uphill start and finish. "Not too many technical sections," said Team Emu's Justin Guiter, "But a couple that could be challenging. The course layout will be very similar to years past.

"There will be some changes, but mostly administrative. This year will include a Masters 65+ category.  In recent years the number of racers beyond the 65 age mark has grown, so it seems fitting to have them duke it out for a State Championship.

"We've also added a free stocking cap for pre-registering online instead of our traditional t-shirts.  This piggybacking off our socks for Spooky, as we all looked in our closets and drawers and realized how many years of t-shirts we had sitting there.

"We're also excited to announce our new State Championship jerseys.  Each champion can wear a State Championship jersey for their podium picture.  They will also have the option to purchase one following the race.  With some parameters, they'll be able to race with it next season. A lot of states have Championship jerseys, and with Iowa's crammed cyclocross schedule, and a World Cup event, it seemed to be a good fit.

Lion's Park in Altoona is under two hours drive from eastern Iowa. The forecast for Saturday so far is low 40s and a chance of rain.  Register online at USAC.
