Despite a chance of thunderstorms, 36 racers turned up for the CRANDIC Time Trial on June 6. Continuing a run of good luck with the weather, we never had more than a sprinkle. And in contrast with last month, light winds made for a fast night. Many racers put down fast times, including Timothy Doyle coming within seconds of the former course record. The stand out ride of the evening, though, was Luke Arens, home for the summer from Marion University. Luke used to threaten our course record as a junior back when he raced the CRANDIC Time Trial on his road bike. Now a Cat 1 racer with Above and Beyond Cancer p/b Bike World, Luke showed up last night "just for fun" with full aero bike and kit, and set himself a goal of 30mph average. He rode 20:11.59 to SMASH our course record by almost a minute and a half. Next month he's shooting for sub 20! Special thanks to Michelle Wall for so many wonderful photos.

Thirty one racers toed the line May 2 for the first CRANDIC Time Trial of 2023. It was a hardy effort, as several days of severe winds had just started to subside, leaving us with "only" 20 mph sustained winds and some truly crazy gusts. With all that wind, some racers switched to road bikes. Others used their time trial bikes but with shallower road wheels. The rest went off on our regular TT setup. Remarkably, no one ended up in the ditch. Looking at the results it's hard to spot a trend as to what was fastest. But it's safe to say that no one set a PR that night, unless maybe this was their first CRANDIC Time Trial. Thanks, as always, to everyone who helps make the race possible:
our Chief Official, Larry Howe, and USAC-official-in-training Scott Kacena; start/finish marshals Brad Roark and Gary Henry; turnaround marshal and photographer Burne Sippy; and photographers Michelle Wall and Nick Hoefer. We couldn't do it without you! |
